Husqvarna Chainsaw Chain Sizes: Complete Model Guide (Australia) | Farm & Acre Co
Share
Husqvarna is one of the most popular chainsaw brands in Australia — from the 120 Mark II for light home use through to the 572 XP for heavy professional work. But finding the right replacement chain can be frustrating if you're not sure what specs your model needs.
This guide covers the most common Husqvarna models sold in Australia, with the exact chain size for each one.
How to Find Your Husqvarna Chain Size
Before you look at the table below, here are three quick ways to confirm your chain size:
1. Check the Bar
Look at the guide bar near the tip or where it enters the saw body. Most Husqvarna bars have the pitch, gauge, and drive link count stamped or etched into the metal.
2. Check the Manual
Your owner's manual lists the recommended chain specs. If you've lost the paper manual, Husqvarna has digital versions on their website.
3. Look at the Old Chain
If you still have the old chain or its packaging, the specs are printed there. You can also count the drive links manually.

Can I Use a Non-Husqvarna Chain on My Husqvarna Saw?
Yes. Chain sizing is universal — any chain with the correct pitch, gauge, and drive link count will fit your Husqvarna. Oregon, Carlton, and other aftermarket chains work perfectly well. You don't need to buy Husqvarna-branded chain.
What's the Difference Between .325" and 3/8" Pitch?
.325" pitch** is used on Husqvarna's smaller mid-range saws (435, 440, 445, 450). It's a slightly narrower chain designed for saws under about 50cc.
- **3/8" pitch** is used on larger farm and professional saws (450 Rancher, 455, 460, 555, 562, etc.). It's a wider, more aggressive chain for more powerful saws.
They are **not interchangeable**. Your saw and bar are set up for one or the other.
Can I Put a Longer Bar and Chain on My Husqvarna?
Within reason. Most Husqvarna saws can handle one size up from standard (e.g. 18" to 20"), but going too long means the engine doesn't have enough power to pull the chain efficiently. Stick to the manufacturer's recommended range.
My Husqvarna 440 Came with a 16" Bar but I See 18" Listed — Which Is Right?
Some models are sold with different bar lengths depending on the kit. The 440 commonly ships with either 16" or 18". Check your actual bar — the specs stamped on it are what matter, not what was standard from the factory.
What Chain Type Should I Choose?
For most farm and general use in Australia:
Semi chisel — best all-rounder, holds edge in hardwood and dirty timber
Full chisel — faster cut in clean timber, dulls quicker in dirty wood
Tungsten carbide — if you want maximum edge life and cut hardwood or dirty timber regularly
If you're cutting Australian hardwood firewood (ironbark, box, red gum), semi chisel or tungsten carbide is the way to go.
What About the Husqvarna X-Cut Chain?
Husqvarna's X-Cut is their own premium chain line. It's good quality, but it's also more expensive than equivalent aftermarket chains. The SP33G is their most common 3/8" .050" chain.
You don't need X-Cut specifically — any quality chain in the right specs will do the job. But if you've used X-Cut and like it, there's nothing wrong with sticking with it.
