Chainsaw Chain Sharpening Jig: Which Type Is Worth It?

Most blunt chains aren't worn out, they've been sharpened badly. Freehand filing feels easy enough, but the angle wanders a little more with every tooth, and after a few rounds the chain cuts worse than before you started. A sharpening jig exists to fix exactly that problem: it holds the file at the same angle on every tooth, every time.
This guide is about picking the right type of jig, file guides, bar-mounted jigs and bench grinders, not the filing technique itself. One thing to flag up front: if you're running tungsten carbide chain, a standard steel file won't touch it. Carbide needs diamond, either a diamond grinding wheel or a diamond file. What a Sharpening Jig Actually Does
Each cutter on a chainsaw chain is a small chisel. For the chain to cut straight and fast, every one of those chisels needs to be ground at the same angle and filed back to the same length. That's the entire job of sharpening, and it's exactly the part freehand filing struggles with.
Filing by eye typically goes wrong in three ways:
- The angle drifts. You start at the right angle, but by tooth fifteen your wrist has rotated a few degrees and nobody's the wiser.
- The strokes aren't even. Some teeth get three strokes, some get five. The cutters end up different lengths, and uneven cutters make a chain pull to one side and cut in a curve.
- The file rides at the wrong height. Too high and you barely touch the edge; too low and you hook the tooth so it grabs instead of cutting.
A jig doesn't sharpen better than a skilled hand, plenty of old timber workers file freehand beautifully. What it does is make an average hand consistent. The file sits at a fixed angle and height, so the only thing left to get right is the number of strokes.

The Three Main Types of Sharpening Jig
Ignore the brand names and the gimmicks, nearly every chain sharpening tool on the market falls into one of three buckets.
File guides and rolling guides
The simplest option: a flat plate or roller guide that clips over a round file, or sits on top of the chain, with angle lines stamped into it. You line the marks up with the bar by eye and file as normal. The guide controls the file's height and depth in the cutter, and the stamped lines keep your angle roughly honest.
They're cheap, they weigh nothing, and they live in the toolbox or your pocket, which means you can touch up the chain on the saw, in the paddock, halfway through a day's cutting. The trade-off is that they're still partly freehand: the guide helps, but the angle is only as good as your eye on those stamped lines.
Best suited to occasional firewood cutters and anyone who wants quick field touch-ups between proper sharpens.
Bar-mounted jigs
A bar-mounted jig clamps onto the chainsaw bar and holds the file in a small adjustable frame. You set the filing angle on a dial, lock the depth, and the jig presents the file to every cutter at exactly the same angle and height. Most also index against each tooth so the cutter lengths stay even.
Setup takes a few minutes each time, and it's slower per tooth than freehand. But it's the most consistent manual option there is, every tooth identical, no workshop required, no power needed. For a farm saw that gets sharpened every few weekends, this is usually the sweet spot.
Best suited to farmers and regular users who want grinder-level consistency without taking the chain off the saw.
Bench and electric grinders
A bench grinder (chain grinder) is the workshop option. The chain comes off the saw and clamps into a vice on the machine; a small grinding wheel swings down onto each cutter at a preset angle. It's fast, it's dead consistent, and it's the only practical way to rescue a badly damaged chain, say one that's found a rock and needs every cutter taken back past the damage.
Two cautions. First, heat: hold the wheel on a cutter too long and the steel blues and loses its hardness, after which that tooth never holds an edge again. Light, brief passes are the rule. Second, grinders remove more metal per sharpen than a file does, so a chain maintained only on an aggressive grinder reaches the end of its life sooner.
Best suited to contractors, high-volume users, anyone maintaining several chains in rotation, and, fitted with a diamond wheel, it's the go-to for carbide chain.

The Big Exception: Tungsten Carbide Chains
Here's where a lot of sharpening advice falls over. Tungsten carbide chains have carbide tips brazed onto the cutters, and carbide is far harder than any steel file. Run a standard file over a carbide cutter and you'll wear out the file while the cutter sits there untouched. The same goes for the standard stone wheel on a bench grinder.
Carbide needs diamond. Two practical options:

- A diamond file for hand touch-ups, slower, but it works where a grinder isn't an option.
The flip side is that you'll be sharpening far less often. When to Sharpen and When to Replace
A jig keeps a chain cutting well for its whole life, but no jig extends that life forever. Knowing when to stop sharpening matters as much as knowing how.
Sharpen when:
- The chain is dull from normal cutting, fine dust instead of proper chips, more pressure needed, smoke in the cut.
- The cutters still have plenty of length left above their wear marks (the small line stamped on each cutter).
- The damage is light, slightly rounded edges from dirty bark, one clipped tooth.
Replace when:
- Cutters are filed back to their wear marks. Past that line there isn't enough steel left to hold an edge safely.
- The chain has stretched so far the tensioner is at the end of its travel.
- There are cracked, bent or damaged links, no amount of sharpening fixes a structural problem.
- A rock strike has wrecked multiple cutters and grinding past the damage would take the chain to its wear marks anyway.

Jig Mistakes That Ruin Chains
A jig removes most of the guesswork, but it can't save you from these:
- Wrong file size for the chain. The round file diameter has to match your chain's pitch, too small and you hook the cutters, too big and you blunt them. Check the chain's packaging or spec sheet before you buy files.
- Ignoring the depth gauges. The depth gauges (rakers) set how big a bite each cutter takes. Sharpen the cutters ten times without ever touching the rakers and you get a chain that's razor sharp but barely cuts. Take the rakers down too far and the chain grabs violently, genuinely dangerous.
- Uneven strokes per tooth. The jig fixes the angle, not the count. Three strokes on every tooth means even cutters; three on some and six on others means a chain that cuts in a banana.
- Cooking cutters on a grinder. Blued steel is soft steel. Light passes, let each tooth cool, never lean on the wheel.

- Steel on carbide. Worth repeating: standard files and stone wheels do nothing to carbide tips except wear themselves out. Diamond only.
FAQ
Do I really need a jig, or is freehand filing fine?
If you sharpen rarely and your results are good, freehand is fine. But if your chain cuts in a curve, blunts quickly after sharpening, or needs force to feed into the wood, inconsistent filing is the most likely cause, and a jig is the cheapest fix there is.
What's the best sharpening jig for a farm saw?
The most common setup we'd suggest is a bar-mounted jig for proper sharpens, plus a simple file guide in the ute for touch-ups. If you're running several saws or cutting most weeks, a bench grinder earns its spot in the shed, and it's the right base for a diamond wheel if you move to carbide chain.
Can I sharpen a tungsten carbide chain with a normal file?
No. Carbide is harder than the file, so the file wears out and the cutter stays blunt. Carbide chains need a diamond grinding wheel or a diamond file. The upside is they hold an edge up to 10x longer than standard chain, so it's a job you do far less often.
How many times can a chain be sharpened?
There's no fixed number, it depends how much metal comes off each time.
