Why does the applicator have to match the tag?
An applicator is built around the shape of the tag. The pin, the jaw spacing and the seating point are all set for one style of tag. Force a two-piece tag into a one-piece tool, or the other way round, and the tag will not close square. That is when ears tear and tags get chewed up.
Matching the applicator to the tag gives you a clean, straight application every time. It is easier on the animal, faster through the race, and you waste far fewer tags. It is the single biggest thing that goes wrong for people, and it is completely avoidable.
The three FOFIA applicators
There are three you need to know, split by tag build and species.
- FOFIA Universal Applicator (red) is the everyday workhorse for two-piece tags. It suits visual and management tags across cattle, sheep and goats. If you run standard two-piece tags, this is your tool.
- FOFIA One-Piece Applicator (yellow) is for one-piece tags, like the long life maxi tags and one-piece feedlot tags. These are cattle tags built as a single moulded piece.

Two-piece vs one-piece tags, what's the difference?
A two-piece tag comes as a female tag and a separate male pin or button. The pin pushes through the ear and locks into the back of the female tag. Most NLIS breeder tags and management tags are two-piece, and they use the red Universal applicator.
A one-piece tag is a single moulded strip that folds through the ear and locks onto itself. There is no separate pin. The long life maxi tags and one-piece feedlot tags are built this way, and they use the yellow One-Piece applicator.
If you are holding two separate parts, it is two-piece and the red tool applies it. If it is one moulded piece, it is one-piece and the yellow tool applies it.
What about the battery E-Tagger?
The battery E-Tagger is an applicator option for high volume work, where you are tagging a lot of animals and want to save your hand. It comes in a Pulse one-piece version and a Pro two-piece version, matched to the tag build the same way the manual tools are.

Spare pins and maintenance
Applicator pins wear out. That is normal, they are a consumable part. A worn or bent pin is a common cause of poor application, so it pays to keep spares on hand and swap them before they let you down.
