Sheep EID Tags Australia 2026

Electronic identification for sheep is no longer optional in most of Australia. If you run sheep or goats, understanding EID tags, what they are, when you need them, and how to order, is essential.

This guide covers everything you need to know about sheep EID tags in Australia, including the current state-by-state requirements for 2026.

What Are Sheep EID Tags?

Sheep EID tags (Electronic Identification tags) are small ear tags with an RFID microchip inside. Each tag stores a unique electronic number that's read with a scanner. When scanned, the number links to your property on the NLIS database, providing full traceability from birth to slaughter.

They work the same way as cattle NLIS tags, but they're smaller and designed for sheep and goat ears.

EID tags are also called:

  • NLIS sheep tags
  • Electronic sheep tags
  • RFID sheep tags
  • Sheep NLIS tags

They all refer to the same thing, an NLIS-accredited electronic ear tag for sheep.

Why Are Sheep EID Tags Becoming Mandatory?

Australia has used NLIS electronic identification for cattle since 2004. Sheep identification relied on visual mob-based tags for years, but that's changing. The push for individual electronic sheep identification is driven by:

  • Disease traceability: individual EID lets authorities trace a single animal back to its property of origin within hours, not days
  • Food safety: export markets increasingly require individual traceability
  • Biosecurity: EID supports faster response to disease outbreaks like foot-and-mouth or screw-worm fly
  • Flock management: individual data means better breeding, health, and production decisions

State-by-State Sheep EID Requirements (2026)

Every state is at a different stage of rolling out mandatory sheep EID. Here's where things stand in 2026:

Victoria: MANDATORY

Victoria was first to mandate sheep EID. All sheep and non-exempt goats must have an NLIS-accredited electronic tag before any movement off property. This has been in effect since 1 January 2022.

  • EID required for ALL movements (sales, transfers, slaughter, shows)
  • Tags must be ordered through the Agriculture Victoria Tags Online system
  • Both breeder (white/year colour) and post-breeder (pink) EID tags available

South Australia: MANDATORY

SA requires electronic identification for all sheep and goats moving off property.

  • EID mandatory for all movements
  • $1.50 per tag biosecurity levy applies to all NLIS tag purchases
  • $0.475 rebate available on some tag types (orange/post-breeder)

Western Australia: MANDATORY

WA requires individual electronic identification for all sheep and goats.

  • EID required for all movements off property
  • Tag Incentive Payment (TIP) scheme: rebates available for WA producers
  • $0.60 rebate on orange/pink/yellow tags

Tasmania: MANDATORY

  • EID mandatory for all movements
  • $1.00 per tag state rebate available

New South Wales: TRANSITIONING

NSW is actively transitioning to mandatory individual sheep EID. The rollout is underway.

  • EID becoming mandatory, check current requirements with Local Land Services (LLS)
  • If you're setting up a new tagging system, go with EID now to avoid re-tagging later

Queensland: TRANSITIONING

  • EID requirements expanding in 2026
  • DPI consent required before purchasing NLIS tags (QLD-specific requirement)

Types of NLIS Sheep Tags

  • Breeder EID Tags: for sheep born on your property. Colour matches the current year (2026 = Orange).
  • Post-Breeder EID Tags (Pink): for purchased sheep being re-tagged to your PIC.
  • Visual Management Tags: non-electronic colour tags for on-farm management. Used alongside EID tags.
  • Combo Sets: EID tag in one ear, matching visual tag in the other.

Common Questions

Do I need EID tags for sheep staying on my property?

The requirement usually triggers when animals leave the property. But tagging at lamb marking is much easier than trying to catch grown sheep later. If EID is coming to your state, start now.

Can I use cattle EID tags on sheep?

No. Sheep tags are smaller and lighter, designed for sheep ears. Cattle tags are too heavy and will cause problems.

What if a sheep EID tag falls out?

Apply a new post-breeder (pink) EID tag and update your records. The NLIS system can handle multiple tags per animal.

How much do sheep EID tags cost?

EID tag pricing varies by brand and volume, typically $2.50–$5.00 per tag. Visual tags are cheaper. State rebates can reduce the effective cost (TAS $1.00/tag, WA $0.60/tag, SA $0.475/tag). Contact us for a quote based on your flock size and state.
