Australian Year Colour Guide

Visual tags follow the 8-year Australian colour cycle:

2022 = RED
2023 = BLUE
2024 = BLACK
2025 = WHITE
2026 = ORANGE
2027 = LIGHT GREEN
2028 = PURPLE
2029 = YELLOW

Note: Year colours are recommended but not mandatory for cattle tagging. NLIS Post-Breeder tags must be ORANGE.

NLIS Compliance & State Requirements

The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) is Australia's system for the identification and traceability of cattle, sheep and goats. This product meets all national NLIS requirements for cattle identification.

National Requirements

All cattle must be permanently identified with an NLIS device before leaving their property of birth
NLIS (Breeder) devices for cattle leaving property of birth
NLIS (Transaction) devices for subsequent movements
Electronic identification (EID) provides enhanced traceability and market access
Property Identification Code (PIC) must be registered for all livestock properties

State-Specific Requirements

Victoria (VIC)

NLIS devices must be applied within 6 months of birth or before leaving property
DEECA (Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action) forms required for certain movements
Movement records must be maintained for 7 years

New South Wales (NSW)

Cattle must be tagged before first movement off property
Electronic devices (EID) required for cattle born after 1 January 2025
LPA (Livestock Production Assurance) compliance recommended

Queensland (QLD)

NLIS devices must be applied before first movement
Both visual and electronic identification required for some movements
Movement documentation must be completed within required timeframes

South Australia (SA)

NLIS breeder devices for cattle leaving property of birth
Biosecurity levy applies ($1.50 per head) - automatically calculated at checkout
Movement records must be kept for 7 years

Western Australia (WA)

NLIS devices required before movement off property of birth
Movement documentation required for interstate movements
Electronic identification strongly recommended

Tasmania (TAS)

NLIS devices must be applied before leaving property of birth
Strict biosecurity measures in place for island protection

Northern Territory (NT)

NLIS devices required for interstate movements
Electronic identification (EID) strongly recommended for export markets
