NLIS Tag Readers & Scanners Buying Guide

If you've invested in NLIS electronic tags for your cattle, sheep or goats, you need a way to read them. An NLIS tag reader (also called a scanner or wand) scans the RFID chip inside each tag and gives you the unique electronic number — which you can then use for compliance, flock management, drafting, and weighing.

This guide covers the main types of NLIS tag readers available in Australia, what to look for, and which one makes sense for your operation.

How NLIS Tag Readers Work

Every NLIS electronic ear tag contains an RFID transponder with a unique 16-digit number. An NLIS reader sends out a radio signal, the tag responds with its number, and the reader displays or stores that number.

What you can do with a reader:

  • Scan individual animals for NLIS compliance checks
  • Record movements on and off property
  • Link to scales for automated weighing
  • Draft animals based on EID data
  • Record treatments, joining dates, and health events
  • Build individual animal records for flock/herd management

Types of NLIS Tag Readers

1. Handheld Stick Readers (Wand Scanners)

The most common type for general farm use. A stick reader is a handheld wand you hold near the animal's ear to scan the tag. Most have a display screen and internal memory to store scanned numbers.

Best for: Small to medium herds/flocks, yards work, portable use, individual animal checks.

Key features to look for:

  • Read range (typically 15–40cm)
  • Memory capacity (how many scans it stores)
  • Battery life
  • Bluetooth connectivity (to link with phones, tablets, or scales)
  • Ruggedness and water resistance

2. Panel Readers (Race Readers)

Panel readers mount to a race or crush and automatically scan animals as they walk through. They have a much larger read area than stick readers.

Best for: Large operations processing hundreds or thousands of head, automated drafting systems, weighing systems, saleyards and feedlots.

3. Bluetooth Mobile Readers

Smaller, pocket-sized readers that connect to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. You use an app to view and manage scanned data.

Best for: Quick paddock checks, lightweight portable scanning, budget-conscious operations.

What to Consider When Buying an NLIS Reader

Herd/Flock Size

  • Under 200 head — handheld stick reader or Bluetooth mobile reader
  • 200–1,000 head — quality stick reader with Bluetooth (like the Allflex RS420)
  • 1,000+ head — panel reader for race scanning, plus stick reader for paddock work

Budget Guide

Reader Type Price Range
Bluetooth mobile readers $300–$800
Basic stick readers $800–$1,500
Professional stick readers (RS420 class) $1,500–$3,000
Panel readers $3,000–$8,000+

Do You Actually Need a Reader?

If you're only tagging cattle for basic NLIS compliance, you technically don't need your own reader — tags are scanned at saleyards and abattoirs. But a reader pays for itself quickly if you run more than ~50 head and want individual records, need to check tags when animals arrive, or want to integrate EID with weighing or drafting.
