Understanding NLIS Sheep & Goat EID Tags

Electronic Identification (EID) tags are part of Australia's National Livestock Identification System (NLIS). These tags contain a small electronic chip that stores a unique identification number linked to the property of birth.

This system improves livestock traceability, biosecurity, and disease response across the Australian livestock industry.

From 1 January 2025, electronic identification for sheep and goats is being introduced nationally to strengthen traceability.

Using compliant NLIS EID tags ensures your livestock meet regulatory requirements when being sold, transported, or processed.

How Sheep & Goat EID Tags Work

Each electronic tag contains a radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip that can be scanned using a livestock tag reader.

The tag number is linked to the animal’s property of birth and recorded in the NLIS database.

Benefits include:

Faster livestock identification

Improved traceability

Better flock management

Compliance with livestock movement regulations
