How to Order NLIS Tags Online
Share
Ordering NLIS tags for the first time can feel like a lot of steps — PIC numbers, state requirements, tag types, breeder vs post-breeder. But once you understand the process, it's straightforward.
This guide walks you through exactly how to order NLIS tags online in Australia, whether you're ordering cattle tags, sheep EID tags, or goat tags.
Before You Order: What You Need
1. A Property Identification Code (PIC)
Your PIC is the foundation of the NLIS system. Every property that runs livestock must have a PIC. It links your property to the NLIS database — and every tag you order is registered to that PIC.
How to get a PIC:
- NSW — apply through Local Land Services (LLS)
- Queensland — apply through Biosecurity Queensland
- Victoria — apply through Agriculture Victoria
- South Australia — apply through PIRSA
- Western Australia — apply through DPIRD
- Tasmania — apply through DPIPWE
2. Know Your State's Requirements
| State | Key Requirement |
|---|---|
| Queensland | DPI consent required before purchasing NLIS tags |
| Victoria | Cattle tags must be ordered through Agriculture Victoria's system |
| South Australia | $1.50 per tag biosecurity levy applies |
| Western Australia | Tag rebates available through TIP scheme |
| Tasmania | $1.00 per tag state rebate available |
| NSW | Standard requirements; sheep EID transitioning |

- Visual management tags — custom printed colour tags for on-farm ID
- Feedlot tags — one-piece tags for short-term identification
For sheep and goats:
- Breeder EID tags — year colour (2026 = Orange)
- Post-breeder EID tags (Pink) — for purchased animals

How many tags should I order?
Order enough for your current needs plus 10–15% spares for replacements. Tags can fall out — having spares means you can re-tag immediately.
